san miguel de allende, sara wildavskyphoto

Reconstruction of second class (26 Jan 2017):
with my own notes on the film Gúeros and story of Epigmenio Cruz Santos

students’ cuaderno posts - soy yo
further introductions

sara wildavsky photo: casa cerca de san miguel de allende
cuarto - colores - de donde?  sensibilidad? sentimientos?  raíces europeas / indígenas?

roads in san miguel - gabriela’s story - we’ll return to this point

historical self-consciousness -
relatively recent phenomenon - industrial revolution, says critic/theorist clement greenberg

spanish language newspapers to follow:
el país
la jornada
publishing centers: buenos aires-ciudad de méxico

our relationship to the past: history - authorship - culture
critic clement greenberg - david smith’s sculpture - greenberg ordered the griding off the color— like grinding off history
“color detracts from the form” said greenberg—although david smith had painted the work intentionally!
that’s what finally stopped greenberg's career!
and today’s cultural flattening???

mexican film - cinta de 2014 - Güeros  (dir. Alonso Ruizpalacios)
güeros - 5 minute segment when the 4 protagonists actually find
epigmenio cruz santos, in a cafe, now of course much older—and ailing. they see him first de atrás…
“the singer who once made bob dylan cry”  "que una vez hizo una llorar a bob dylan"
legendary 70s folk-rocker - one album - los güeros - then he disappeared
fetish

did he reappear in irving texas at traxcity in 2009?
see you-tube epigmenio cruz

version of albur de amor

no connection between epigmenio cruz santos and albur de amor except that the youtube with HIS NAME is a recording of that song. made at traxcity in irving, texas in 2009? recorded there it seems…
Is this really ECS???  would have to be 60+ if he was active in the 1970s.
more likely someone living out the legend????
what’s the story?   traxcity telephone, in irving, texas: 972-252-5827    near dallas - number out of service (!!!)
3 good background articles on the film:

we play and sing albur de amor—from cancionero p. 3
then play chavela’s version
photo of chavela y antonio bribiescay raúl (salterio)
discussion of lyrics -

a mystery in a mystery: in the film, none of the characters can hear epigmenio’s songs (we see only their faces listening through headphones—so in a sense we never know who he was… except that the legend has it that he once made bob dylan cry) (they were actually listening to josé josé)
epigmenio cruz smith made one album— los güeros —and then apparently disappeared!
IS THE MAN IN THE YOU TUBE EPIGMENIO CRUZ SANTOS HIMSELF?
Part of the mystery…

Traxcity youtube uploaded in 2009—before the film was made in 2014!!!!!

meanings of albur - word game - love - word play challenges, double meanings. octavio paz discusses this.
real diccionario - the many meanings of the word albur, its etymology

these all represents an important leaping back in time - multiple layers of meaning…
2014 -  güeros film - scene where the four young people encounter epigmenio cruz santos character
2009 - recording on youtube, made at traxcity, posted under name of “epigmenio cruz santos”
1970s - epigmenio cruz santos himself - roquero mexico.  a legendary figure who disappeared after the one album. “he could have saved mexican rock”
1960s - chavela and antonio bribiesca - “sentimiento de méxico” (1963) - including albur de amor
1860s - early origins of the song itself, Albur de Amor
Musicologist Vicente T. Mendoza in his book, La Canción Mexicana, gives music and lyrics from mid-19th century (see course bibliography)

then  we sing it together as a class (I’ve noticed the students singing along with both versions prior)

I read from octavio paz - book of essays - tiempo nublado
ensayo Norte y Sur (p.142)
book from Isaac Vasquez, berkeley mMFA student 2 years back- cut-out of hand
signed - octavio paz (in 1980s)
los norteamericanos y los mexicanos -- dos civilizaciones distintas

also: Natalia Lafourcade (b. 1984) canta Azul - soundtrack to Güeros. Agustín Lara - whose recordings were soundtrack for Los Caifanes in 1967 (Juan Ibanez)--the film that inspired Ruizpalacios in Güeros...
