Chalma--Frances Toor

The following are from Frances Toor, A Treasury of Mexican Folkways, originally published in 1947. Her first visit to Chalma was in 1926, and the way she describes the pilgrimage--the origins of the fiesta, how people experienced it at that time--is remarkable. (There's a "la señora" aspect to deal with--but remember the circumstances, and when the book was written.) Also a good example of why I continue to recommend her book--a view into a México that lives in the now distant past. Or can we find ways in which it continues today?

The book has many equally compelling descriptions. It's is still available and relatively inexpensive--a worthwhile online purchase!
